UnSun – Whispers

UnSun’s Whispers from their first album End of Life

Polish metal band, UnSun needs to start shining!

UnSun is this Polish, gothic metal band that is greatly underappreciated. The band is small & sweet. Front woman Anna Aya Stefanowicz aka Aya on vocals, Maurycy Stefanowicz aka Mauser on guitar, Patryk Malinowski aka Patrick on bass, and Wojtek Blazkowski aka Gonzo on drums. Seriously, I do not understand why this band isn’t more popular, then again it’s probably because, sometimes, she is hard to understand. In their music, you can clearly hear her heavy Polish accent but I absolutely love that. Sure, some lyrics are heard to understand but think about the thrash and death metal people listen to, you can’t understand their screaming either!

The band was formed in 2006 by Mauser. Mauser has his own metal band called Vader but this is about Unsun! He wanted his wife, you guessed it, Aya to be front woman and had a vision of combining something a little soft with something a little dark.

“…something incorporating day and night, light and darkness would suit them best. A label for their music which is melancholic and a little dark at times, yet catchy at the same time. Something that would put a name to the bitter-sweet twist of Aya’s highly melodic vocals topping the driving force of the underlying guitar riffs.” – UnSun’s Official Myspace.

With or without Aya’s heavenly voice, the band is just great. Mauser’s awesome shredding are enough to catch one’s ear, Aya adds the little something extra that not only heightens their sic talents, it also has the capacity to bring in female attraction. They just rock – plain & simple.

I would love to hear collaboration between Aya & Maria Brink of American metal group, In This Moment. With Aya’s angelic singing mixing with Maria’s bad ass screaming, I can totally see an instant hit coming from that. Ladies, DO EEETTTTT!!!ImageIn This Moment’s Maria Brink

If they continue their work I believe they will have a great amount of success. The frustrating part about the band is how slow they are working! Although founded in 2006, the band didn’t release their debut album, End of Life, until 2008 which included their single hit Whispers. I had bought that album on iTunes sometime in 2009 & to this day I cannot get tired of replaying. I impatiently waited for their follow up album Clinic For Dolls in 2010 and their single Home was another hit. The video was even better. Whispers’ video was dark and introduced the band to the world with a beautiful front woman with her manly band mates behind her performing. Home was more of a music video concept that takes place in the Steam punk era. The costumes are fitting of the time but performance scenes are still included.

Aya may sing in English but that doesn’t mean she is forgetting her roots. Their track Memories, from End of Life album, is also recorded in Polish. If you want to check it out, click here. What is it about English songs that sound so much better in another language?

Unsun went on tour last year in 2011 but I haven’t heard any news from them since. Seriously, go Google them. If you find any current news, let me know! Anyway, they are pretty awesome, and I will post their videos of Home and Whispers after this post. Hope you guys enjoy them 🙂 .

Keep rockin’ in heaven, Rev

Three years ago today metal lost an awesome drummer who wasn’t anywhere near ready to go. James Sullivan aka The Rev, Avenged Sevenfold’s hot drummer. Some say The Rev passed from accidental overdose while others say it was natural causes. I’ll stick to my guns and say natural causes! Some may call me naïve, whatevs dude! Start your own blog & rant on your own time, move it along.

Besides being a badass drummer, Jimmy actually did have a lot to do with the birth on A7X. After his passing, the band created the video for their song So Far Away. In this video you can really feel the sense of brotherly closeness between the band members. Obviously, the kids are actors but they represent the love the band held for The Rev and wanted to share that with the world. No one can ever understand what it was really like to lose him except the band and his family. It’s a sucky feeling that everyone, unfortunately, has to go through at one point or another.

I was actually introduced to A7X late. In fact, I wasn’t introduced to good music until I hit college! I’d like to think I’ve blossomed from having Backstreet Boys & N’Sync posters hanging on my wall. Once I heard I Won’t See You Tonight (both of them) I knew I needed to hear more. By far, Waking the Fallen will always be the album I will never get tired of because that was the first time I heard their sound. City of Evil will remain my favorite album – end of story. One day I do hope to see them live OR INTERVIEW – WINK WINK!

The guys are going back into the studio to begin recording their new album following Nightmare. Don’t want to wait that long to hear new material? No worries, just throw on your Call of Duty Black Ops II and you can listen to Carry On and if I read correctly, you can actually watch the video at the end of the credits. If you can’t bother to do neither, check it out here. Damn, damn, Synyster still has it!

You’re Heaven’s Drummer Boy, Rev, keep tapping that kit.

t.A.T.u.? No, thank you

Do you guys remember t.A.T.u (t.A.T.y.)? Well I do, fondly! I mean, c’mon, who can forget two hot Russian chicks making out in schoolgirl uniforms? The duo split for a short while and started on their own solo careers. However, in November (last month) the girls appeared live in Romania for The Voice. The term “girls” may be an understatement as the two have clearly grown up from wearing pigtails and knee pads on stage. If you haven’t seen the show, here is the video. Frankly, I always viewed Julia Volkova (brunette) as the stiff upper lip leader and Lena Katina (hot ginger) as the shy, submissive girl. My, have things changed! In these two performances, not only are their voices unfairly tested, Lena appears to really shine (in comparison), covering Julia’s… “singing” but their baby faces have completely changed.

In all fairness, there were rumors that Julia recently had throat surgery, I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt but no one can deny Lena’s almost-voice crack in All About Us. They obviously are not the young girls who sang All the Things She Said and All About Us, so why would anyone tell them to sing both songs? Maybe All the Things She Said because it doesn’t seem to need to hit high pitches as the other one. They should have either picked another song or performed new material. Tone wise – it sucked. Appearance wise… who the hell is that brunette?! I’m sorry but although Lena’s stardom finally shined (mainly because Julia’s voice was weak) I couldn’t help but look at Julia’s face. Something seemed off & unnatural about it but I guess that’s not the only thing that seemed unnatural.

Julia has emerged as this Sasha Grey of music with a spritz of Britney Spears solo artist who has either grown up into her sexuality or has taken advantage of the money and modified her physical appearance but that is another story on its own, whereas Lena seemed to simply have grown up.

Don’t believe me? Remember, these are the FIRST solo videos I saw from both of them. In other words, first impressions. P.S., I know some moms still like to look hot after they’ve popped out a couple of kids but c’mon now. Mommies, you know when it’s time to cover it up…

Dammit, red heads always get the attention with their natural beauties! Aren’t we supposed to kick the gingers, not empower them?! If you’re offended by that previous remark, I suggest you move on because this is clearly not your humor! 😉

Live, their chemistry always seemed forced, never appeared consistent to me. Julia gave the impression that she ran the duo while poor, puppy eyed Lena followed along. Maybe I’ve watched too much Taylor Swift videos and performances and now expect all female artists to be humble, friendly, and happy… at least while PERFORMING. While their lack of stage presence normally fell short, their voices were always up for discussion as well. It’s hard to find any YouTube live performances where they actually sing. Maybe they were doing us a favor by not really singing. Of course, there is one video I did find from Top of the Pops where they do limited singing. You can hear Lena’s & Julia’s voices but when it comes to the high notes, forget it. You can clearly hear the voices change from live to CD.

Sources such as Ace ShowBiz , state the girls split because they were focusing on their own separate careers… hm, that sounds similar to what Lena said but she added more. According to Lena’s own website, Lena-Katina.com, she repeatedly mentioned they were “tired of each other.” In the interview, when asked, “Do you converse with Yulia often?,” she was noted saying, “… we’ve been so tired of each other that is it useful for us not to keep in touch.” Lena also mentions she texts Julia to say ‘happy birthday’ implying they speak maybe once a year to be polite. Interesting choice of words.
