Many people may not know that the U.S. Coast Guard does, indeed, deploy to the Middle East. Don’t feel too bad, I had no idea! I also had no idea I’d marry someone who would enlist yet, here we are! D decided to make a huge decision in his military career that would involve him going overseas. After a few back and forth conversations we came to an agreement: D will not deploy! So, a few months later, he deployed 🙂
It’s been about month since he left to the Middle East and it is not as bad as I thought it was going to be. I joined a Facebook spouse page whose husbands are also in the country D is in. Everyone has different stories and come from different backgrounds but what we all have in common is that we are all separated from our loved one. They have been such an amazing and supportive group!
May – 1 month down
In May, I began planning what I wanted to accomplish during this “free” time. Because I am staying with family, the pressure of finding a job is off. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t need a job but I want a job. Immediately, I woke up the next day, sat my ass on the living room chair, and started applying. I did this every single day for the month of May.
Along with job hunting, family also kept me busy. The first weekend of May was my cousin’s bridal party. This was the first time I was going to see my extended family in a few years. It was so good to see familiar faces and take in how much my little cousins grew up. The second weekend of May was Mother’s Day weekend. That Saturday, a bunch of family members decided to go to my grandmother’s house to celebrate her day. There wasn’t a lot of alcohol as I expected there to be. Then again, all of my uncles have hit that health conscious age … but that didn’t stop the red meat from cooking on the grill outside! I was able to see aunts and uncles, more cousins, their kids and it was just perfect. I had the chance to catch up and make plans that I, undoubtedly, will flake on despite so badly wanting to be included because…
The third weekend was my only free weekend. I spent it doing what I hate doing the most – dress shopping. Not just any dress shopping but fancy dress shopping for my cousin’s wedding. I guess it was inevitable, needing a dress, but that doesn’t change the fact it sucks. Finally, Memorial weekend came. Friday morning came and so did my fucking period! Of fucking course! Now I have to — do nothing. It’s not my wedding weekend, I have no wedding date, I am wearing a loose-fitting dress for Monday’s nuptials.
After a slightly stressful morning driving my pups to the vet, I decided to go with my mom to get a much-needed mani/pedi. Mid way through my pedi, I realized, I am doing my first day of bloody hell perfect! I am getting my first proper pedicure in years, my back is getting massaged by the chair, a manicure is awaiting me, and to top it off, I knew I was getting pizza afterwards to munch on. Every woman should go get a mani/pedi on her first day of her period. Saturday and Sunday came with me spending time with my perfect nephew who left me emotionally and physically drained. Monday was the day of the wedding and it was a beautiful as I expected it to be. I danced the whole night with my family, friends, and by myself. LIQUID COURAGE FOR THE WIN!
Steady as I go
One month down! It hasn’t been as hard as I expected it. I have had friends and family keeping me busy and smiling. I know once I nail an interview, I will have a full-time job that will keep me so busy that time will fly by! Here’s to the rest of the year!
